The Nikon 24-120/4 VR is a consumer lens. I doubt that any sample made today will endure 20 years of constant use without needing repair, as can Nikon's professional lenses like the 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D. This 24-120 has a lot of plastic in it, and depends on the internal motor to focus the lens, not a motor in the camera.

With the AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 E ED VR, Nikon catches up in terms of features by adding VR and an electronic aperture, while at the same time updating the optical construction. With now 20 elements the complexity of the design increased considerably. It has only three stops of VR compared with the Nikkor AF-S FX 70-200mm f/2.8 FL-ED VR but that’s still only one stop less than the aforementioned AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR.
